Passive fire protection measures achieve their intended purpose by raising the fire resistance of the structure, protecting the structure against the effects of fire, reducing fire spread through secondary ignition, limiting the movement of flame and smoke, and minimising the danger of fire-induced collapse or structural distortion. Passive fire protection design, incorporating passive fire protection materials, systems and assemblies, serves by fire containment to protect life, safeguard the building structure, protect assets, maintain building serviceability after fire, minimise rebuild costs, and facilitate quick business recovery and continuity.

This remains the only driver risk assessment validation study that we are aware of, and means that as a tool for driver risk assessment, monitoring and improvement, the Virtual Risk Manager is unique in that it has been validated through applied University research. The outcome shows a clear relationship between crashes and the assessment results for attitude, behaviour, knowledge, hazard perception and personal exposure. - Road Safety: Winter Driving Tips
- UK
- www.rospa.com/road-safety/advice/drivers/better-driving/winter-tips
- Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) driving advice. Skidding can generally be avoided through good observation and anticipation - and smooth use of the vehicle's controls. Your risk of skidding increases if your tyres do not have adequate tyre depth. The legal minimum tread depth for cars and light vehicles in the UK is 1.6mm, but for safety RoSPA recommends 3mm. If you are unsure about the tread depth of the tyres, get them checked by a professional. Correct tyre pressure is also very important. Under-inflated tyres will increase your fuel consumption. Over-inflated tyres will reduce your grip on the road, making it vital that you reduce your speed. It is better to avoid skidding rather than hope you can control a skid when it happens. Such a hope is rarely realised.
- Road Transport Drivers: Europe
- SPAIN
- http://osha.europa.eu/en/sector/road_transport
- European Agency for Health and Safety at Work Managing occupational safety and health risks to drivers in the road transport sector can be challenging because drivers work alone, away from their base, and have to contend with traffic danger in addition to many other risks that are difficult for them to control. But risk management measures can be successful if they take account of how the sector operates in practice, as well as the characteristics of drivers themselves and the way they work. The road transport sector includes: Lorry and van drivers; Taxi drivers and chauffeurs; Bus and coach drivers; Bicycle and motorbike delivery services. Working in the road transport sector requires high levels of professional skill and competence. For example, drivers of long-distance road haulage vehicles must not only be capable drivers but they must also be able to load and unload, repair technical problems, have certain language skills, carry out basic administration, and act as 'ambassadors' for their company in other countries. They have to deliver their goods in time, regardless of weather and road conditions. They may transport dangerous substances or fragile goods that require extra care and responsibility. In the road transport sector, as with any other, it is important to pay attention to working conditions in order to ensure a skilled and motivated workforce.

- Safety Representatives
- UK
- www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr363.htm
- Health and Safety Executive study presents a review of the quantitative and qualitative evidence for the link between worker representation and consultation and effective health and safety management. Through a series of detailed case studies in two sectors of the economy, it examines the dynamics of representation and consultation in improving health and safety performance. Its review of previous studies and the evidence of the case studies detailed in the report support a conclusion that joint arrangements, through which workers are represented and consulted on their health and safety, are likely to have better outcomes than arrangements in which management acts without consultation. However, it suggests that arrangements for worker representation and consultation are dependent upon a number of preconditions for their effectiveness. These include a strong legislative steer, effective external inspection and control, demonstrable senior management commitment and capacity towards both health and safety and a participative approach, competent hazard/risk evaluation and control, effective autonomous worker representation at the workplace and external trade union support.

Aims to provide workers with information about the main causes of injury and ill-health to those working in the stone industry. It provides guidance to employers on how to effectively manage the health and safety risks which are common in stone working. The stone industry includes traditional stone mason work as well as the manufacture of stone work tops. The Getting started section explains what HSE inspectors look for in assessing your workshop and having the correct paperwork. Conditions will vary from clean workshops to those where water washes across the floor and dust is allowed to accumulate surfaces. General tidiness is often a good indication of how well other issues are being managed. Machinery and hand tools should all be well maintained and have the correct safeguards. They should also only be used by those trained and competent to do so and you should be able to provide evidence to prove this. Dust and fume extraction (local exhaust ventilation) should also be well maintained. Supervisors and managers should ensure that safe working practices are followed and action taken if unsafe practices are observed. Inspectors will also look at other safety issues, such as work at height and transport. They will also want to see good control of health risks from manual handling, noise, hand arm vibration and hazardous dust.

- Gone2Lunch is a UK campaign to make sure you get your proper entitlement of a stress-free, private lunch hour at work. It is a fact that the British work harder and longer than any other nation in the European Union. Not only that, the culture has resulted in the creation of a working environment where lunch is deemed only for "wimps", and a well-earned breather dismissed as little more than "slacking off". Aggressive management and the boom in out-of-town business parks confine more and more people to their desks. Little wonder that the last refuge of relaxation is a quick Web surf or email session during a snatched 5 minutes here or there. Now even this is under threat as "Big Brother"-style employers remove these rights of Internet/email access, subjecting employees to constant surveillance and invasions of privacy.

- Subsport aims to show that the substitution of chemicals is a fundamental measure to reduce risks arising from the use of dangerous chemicals in products and processes. Substitution can support risk reduction for the environment, workers, consumers and public health. Substitution can be accomplished by the use of an alternative, less hazardous substance. In many cases other technologies that do not need hazardous chemicals can be applied. We do not consider the reduction of exposures to dangerous substances, e.g. by means of protective or containment measures like extraction or waste water treatment plants, to be substitution. The goal of the SUBSPORT project is to develop an internet portal that constitutes a state-of-the-art resource on safer alternatives to the use of hazardous chemicals. It should be a source of not just information on alternative substances and technologies, but also of tools and guidance for substance evaluation and substitution management.

- Violence at Work: Health Sector
- SWITZERLAND
- www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/injury/work9/en
- World Health Organisation (WHO) website on violence at work. The enormous cost of workplace violence for the individual, the workplace and the community at large is becoming more and more apparent. Recent information shows that the current knowledge is only the tip of the iceberg. While workplace violence affects practically all sectors and all categories of workers, the health sector is at major risk: more than half of all workers in this sector may have experienced violent incidents at some point. Ambulance and pre-hospital emergency staff are reported to be at greatest risk, nurses are three times more likely, on average, to experience violence in the workplace than other occupational groups. Since the large majority of the health workforce is female, the gender dimension of the problem is very evident. The International Labour Office (ILO), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the World Health Organization (WHO) and Public Services International (PSI) launched in 2000 a joint programme in order to develop sound policies and practical approaches for the prevention and elimination of violence in the health sector. The "Framework Guidelines for Addressing Workplace Violence in the Health Sector" are intended to support all those responsible for safety in the workplace, be it governments, employers, workers, trade unions, professional bodies or members of the public. The tool will guide you through the complexity of issues to be considered when developing anti-violence policies and strategies for all work-settings in the health sector. These can be adapted to meet local and national needs and constraints.

Feel free to contact us for any further information and/or details you may require at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/contact/contact_en.htm. Directives 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) are designed to tackle the fast increasing waste stream of electrical and electronic equipment and complements European Union measures on landfill and incineration of waste. Increased recycling of electrical and electronic equipment will limit the total quantity of waste going to final disposal. Producers will be responsible for taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment. This will provide incentives to design electrical and electronic equipment in an environmentally more efficient way, which takes waste management aspects fully into account. Consumers will be able to return their equipment free of charge. In order to prevent the generation of hazardous waste, Directive 2002/95/EC requires the substitution of various heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium) and brominated flame retardants (polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)) in new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market from 1 July 2006.

- Welding and Manganese: Potential Neurologic Effects
- USA
- www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/welding
- US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH welding and manganese topic page gives advice and guidance to those worker with welding fumes that are composed of metals and most fumes contain a small percentage of manganese. There is a concern by workers, employers, and health professionals about potential neurological effects associated with exposure to manganese in welding fumes. NIOSH has been conducting research and reviewing the published scientific literature to assess this problem. Manganese is an essential nutrient. A healthy person with normal liver and kidney function can excrete excess dietary manganese. Inhaled manganese is of greater concern because it bypasses the body's normal defense mechanisms. This can lead to manganese accumulation and adverse health effects including damage to the lungs, liver, kidney and central nervous system. Male workers exposed to manganese also have a higher risk of fertility problems. Prolonged exposure to high manganese concentrations (>1 mg/m³) in air may lead to a Parkinsonian syndrome known as "manganism". Chronic exposure to the manganese-containing pesticide, maneb, is also reported to cause Parkinson-like symptoms. Parkinson-like symptoms may include tremors, slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, and poor balance. Recent studies indicate neurological and neurobehavioral deficits may occur when workers are exposed to low levels of manganese (<0.2 mg/m³) in welding fumes. These effects include changes in mood and short-term memory, altered reaction time, and reduced hand-eye coordination.

Other sponsors included Scottish Natural Heritage, Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, and the Peak District National Park Authority. Over 130 different people attended; the majority were practitioners. Demand exceeded ESRC/NERC funded places by over 70%. The first seminar took place in Edinburgh 31 March - 1 April 2008. The second and third seminars were held in Manchester on 24 June 2008 and 31 March - 1 April 2009. Seminar four was held in the Peak District 13 - 14 May 2009. The four seminars created a vibrant cross-sector multidisciplinary forum. Practitioners comprised more than half the audience. The series brought together over 130 researchers, policy-makers, Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) officers, land managers and other stakeholders. It was the first time the FRS had been involved in coordinated academic debate on UK wildfires. A policy brief is being prepared. FIRES raised awareness of the UK wildfire problem and its significance for ES. A clear need for further interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange has been demonstrated.

- Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) National Occupational Safety and Health Committee (NOSHC) initiated the creation of an online hub, designed to provide detailed information about dozens of memorial sites across the UK. The first official Workers' Memorial Day was marked with a website dedicated to thousands of people who never returned home from work. Wednesday, 28 April 2010, gave the UK's workforce a chance to reflect on the many people who are killed, seriously injured or made ill while doing their job. Compiled by health and safety information expert Sheila Pantry, the regularly updated electronic guide includes locations of everything from plaques to pillars, as well as photographs, details of temporary commemorative sites, links to other sources and a diary of events. Among the many permanent memorials listed are those dedicated to victims of disasters at the Piper Alpha oilrig near Aberdeen, the Flixborough chemical plant in Lincolnshire and the Senghenydd mine in Wales. Yet for every catastrophe involving multiple fatalities, there are hundreds more accidents for which there is no memorial and which can only be remembered quietly by grieving families, colleagues and employers.
