- Control of the Hazards Associated with the Transport and Bulk Storage of Fireworks. This website describes a European Union (EU) funded project, CHAF, which aims to provide a better understanding of critical conditions that give rise to explosions in packaged fireworks, and improved methods of predicting performance in large scale storage. Annual sales of fireworks in the EU amount to tens of thousands of tonnes and similar quantities are held in storage. This project will provide a framework for the safe storage of bulk fireworks which will have direct benefits to the EU in terms of improving worker safety and reducing the work-related hazards to which members of the public are exposed. Also, reduction of the severity of large scale fireworks storage accidents will have beneficial environmental effects in terms of minimising the release of toxic fumes and reducing off site blast damage. Other activities of the working party focus on: i) enhancing information sharing on policy and regulatory developments so as to alert stakeholders to key developments as they occur; ii) working towards more effective product risk assessment globally; and iii) developing an injury data portal, which would bring together data on product-related injuries onto one platform. The Working Party is co-operating closely with international organisations that are active in product safety, including the Asian-Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), GS1 (a non-profit business organisation), the International Consumer Product Safety Caucus (ICPSC), the International Consumer Policy Health & Safety Organization (ICPHSO), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). - Hazard Datasheets on Occupations
- SWITZERLAND
- www.ilo.org/safework/info/publications/WCMS_113135/lang--en/index.htm
- International Labour Organisation: International Hazard Datasheets on Occupations is a multipurpose information resource containing information on the hazards, risks and notions of prevention related to a specific occupation. These datasheets are intended for those professionally concerned with health and safety at work including: occupational physicians and nurses, safety engineers, hygienists, education and information specialists, inspectors, employers' representatives, workers' representatives, safety officers and other competent persons. They are available online. The Datasheets list in a standard format different hazards to which a worker, in the normal course of normal work, may be exposed to. It provides several measures for the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases. These datasheets are a source of information rather than advice. Each Datasheet is, to a certain degree, similar to a Chemical Safety Data Sheet (also known as a Material Safety Data Sheet). The Chemical Safety Data Sheet is a standardized document that serves to alert both the worker and the occupational safety and health professional about the relevant hazards at the workplace as well as means of prevention on a specific chemical substance. However, unlike the Chemical Safety Data Sheets, the International Hazard Datasheets on Occupations is designed to cover the range of hazards to which the worker may be exposed to while performing the tasks typically associated with the occupation being addressed. The currently available Datasheets have been developed in a project undertaken by the ILO and the Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene (IIOSH), in cooperation with the European Union and ILO/CIS Centres throughout the world.

- European Commission Directorate General Environment has day-to-day management of the site http://ec.europa.eu/environment/index_en.htm. The European Commission always publishes its official documents in all the EU languages (see the EUR-Lex database on http://eur-lex.europa.eu). The Europa site also offers you much more information on the Commission's work, including its environment policy, in a variety of languages (see http://europa.eu/pol/env/index_en.htm). Feel free to contact us for any further information and/or details you may require at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/contact/contact_en.htm. Directives 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) are designed to tackle the fast increasing waste stream of electrical and electronic equipment and complements European Union measures on landfill and incineration of waste. Increased recycling of electrical and electronic equipment will limit the total quantity of waste going to final disposal. Producers will be responsible for taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment. This will provide incentives to design electrical and electronic equipment in an environmentally more efficient way, which takes waste management aspects fully into account. Consumers will be able to return their equipment free of charge. In order to prevent the generation of hazardous waste, Directive 2002/95/EC requires the substitution of various heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium) and brominated flame retardants (polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)) in new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market from 1 July 2006.

- Heat Stress Assessment Methodology
- UK
- www.hse.gov.uk/research/index.htm
- The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published an important research report developing a method for assessing stress caused by exposure to heat in the in the workplace. The research concludes that large parts of UK industry have difficulty in managing and assessing heat stress. It has long been known that work related heat stress could compromise health and safety and lead directly or indirectly to worker injury and death. As a result the HSE sponsored a research project to ensure that developments in heat stress assessment were evaluated and documented in a valid and usable methodology. A framework was formulated for the design, development and evaluation of such a methodology. This framework consisted of three stages; an Exploratory Stage, a Design and Development Stage and an Evaluation Stage. This resulted in the development of a practical heat stress assessment methodology. Copies of The development of a practical heat stress assessment methodology for use in UK industry RR 008 ISBN 0 7176 2533 8, price £25, are available from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2WA, UK. - History of Occupational Safety and Health
- UK
- www.historyofosh.org.uk
- UK History of Occupational Safety and Health – have you ever wondered how the UK became one of the safest places in the world to go to work? If so, this website, which is put together by various members of RoSPA’s National Occupational Safety and Health Committee (NOSHC), is the place for you. In 2011, the NOSHC decided to take forward the History of Occupational Safety and Health project in order to create a suitable “map” of occupational safety and health information sources and materials from an historical point of view, with as many links to original texts as possible. This website, launched to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April 2014, is the result of that project. An invaluable resource for students, lecturers, trainers, health and safety professionals and others with a general interest in industrial history, the site sets out developments from the 1802 Factory Act all the way through to the most recent regulatory changes made by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It provides a wealth of information for those wishing to track the development of occupational safety and health, be they teaching or studying for professional or academic qualifications or carrying out other research, showing how this area has been at the heart of the UK’s industrial history. Numerous pieces of legislation have been introduced over more than 200 years, covering a wide array of different industries, but their shared aim has been to ensure that workers can go home to their families safe and healthy at the end of each day. It is important to value the history of occupational safety and health, not just to honour its pioneers but to develop a sense of perspective about what needs to be done to continue to tackle preventable harms associated with work, not just in Britain but around the world.
