- Asbestos Interactive Lesson for Apprentices
- UK
- www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/learning-package
- Health and Safety Executive has produced this 45 minute Asbestos interactive lesson for apprentices showing the dangers of asbestos. It is primarily at trades apprentices in the 16 - 19 age group, for delivery by college lecturers and other vocational education providers. It is also relevant to, and capable of being delivered by, industry professionals, e.g. as part of workplace training. Research shows that although tradespeople know that asbestos is harmful to health, they believe that it is a historical problem, and so do not take action to protect themselves. This package is designed to raise awareness of apprentices about the risks they face when working with asbestos, providing them with basic guidance about what they need to do. Younger people, if routinely exposed to asbestos fibres over time, are at greater risk of developing disease than older workers. This is due to the latency of the affects of asbestos on the body. Providing apprentices with key information at an early stage means they are better equipped to challenge poor work practices and protect themselves.

Initially the victims began to contact former colleagues and discovered that many were suffering from respiratory problems. Medical examinations revealed an epidemic of asbestos related disease. They linked up with workers at the Thermoid brakes factory, also in São Paulo, to form the ABREA. ABREA has sought compensation for its members while raising the issue at a national and international level, culminating in the international conference in Osasco in September 2000, that created a very strong influence on the politicians and public opinion that afterwards approved the majority of laws to ban asbestos currently in Brazil in a domino effect. ABREA is nowadays organized in several cities and also in Rio de Janeiro State where a former Johns-Manville subsidiary has a textile plant which the women are the majority of the exposed workers. Influenza is considered to be one of the most acute threats to the population of Europe, as it is to the rest of the World. It is being taken very seriously by ECDC. Each year seasonal influenza, which comes every winter, is responsible for many preventable deaths in all European countries. There were three pandemics of human influenza in the 20th century which between them killed many millions of Europeans. The past five years have seen the emergence of a highly pathogenic avian influenza in Asia and Europe where the virus has shown the ability to infect and kill people. - UK
- www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/biodiesel.htm
- The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) information on biodiesel that is a relatively new synthetic fuel made from vegetable oils, and its domestic production raises serious health and safety concerns. The information on the website describes some of the hazards and contains advice from HSE that biodiesel should not be produced at home. Biodiesel is produced commercially and can be bought from some petrol stations. However there are 'recipes' available on the internet for the domestic production of biodiesel. These usually involve mixing methanol with sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda or lye), and pouring the resulting mixture into vegetable oil. Home production raises serious health and safety concerns, as it involves hazardous chemicals and the risk of fire and explosion. Making biodiesel is a potentially hazardous process that should only be carried out in controlled conditions by people with the proper training and experience. At the very least a poorly made product could seriously damage a vehicle engine.

- British Damage Management Association (BDMA) was formed on 1 December 1999 and marked a milestone in relations between the insurance industry and those who provide recovery and restoration services. Modern damage management involves highly technical disciplines and the industry is traditionally intensely competitive. The creation of the BDMA indicated the significance damage management practitioners attach to the establishment and maintenance of uniform standards of care and codes of practice, underpinned by technical and corporate training. The BDMA is committed to responding to the insurers' need for contractors to work to recognised standards. With the aim of continually raising industry standards the Association contributes to a number of insurance led think tanks and wider research initiatives. As the certifying authority for recovery and restoration practitioners BDMA members gain professional accreditation through a tiered examination system. This enables them to display the Collective Mark, allowing potential customers and the public in general to identify competent individual technicians and corporate damage management organisations. The site has technical guidelines, standards, and links to other relevant sites.

- BELGIUM
- www.subsport.eu
- Subsport aims to show that the substitution of chemicals is a fundamental measure to reduce risks arising from the use of dangerous chemicals in products and processes. Substitution can support risk reduction for the environment, workers, consumers and public health. Substitution can be accomplished by the use of an alternative, less hazardous substance. In many cases other technologies that do not need hazardous chemicals can be applied. We do not consider the reduction of exposures to dangerous substances, e.g. by means of protective or containment measures like extraction or waste water treatment plants, to be substitution. The goal of the SUBSPORT project is to develop an internet portal that constitutes a state-of-the-art resource on safer alternatives to the use of hazardous chemicals. It should be a source of not just information on alternative substances and technologies, but also of tools and guidance for substance evaluation and substitution management.

- BELGIUM
- http://ec.europa.eu/transport/themes/urban/vehicles/directive/index_en.htm
- European Directive on the Promotion of Clean and Energy Efficient Road Transport Vehicles (Directive 2009/33/EC) aims at a broad market introduction of environmentally-friendly vehicles. The Clean Vehicle Directive requires that energy and environmental impacts linked to the operation of vehicles over their whole lifetime are taken into account in purchase decisions. These impacts shall include at least fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and emissions of regulated pollutants like NOx, NMHC and particulate matter. Thus the Clean Vehicle Directive is an important step towards the internalisation of the external costs of road transport. The nature of the information about the Clean Vehicle Directive and the public procurement activities following the publication of the Directive make it advisable to disseminate such information via the internet. Additional information about the financial instruments available in the Member States in the fields of urban mobility and promotion of clean and energy-efficient road transport were to be included in the relevant websites. The Clean Vehicle Portal aims to ensure a level of demand for clean and energy-efficient road transport vehicles and encourage manufacturers to invest in development of vehicles with low energy consumption, CO2 emissions and pollutant emissions. It offers access to a large and innovative database system of vehicle data. Feel free to use the vehicle-search above and achieve comparable listings of vehicles in order to your search terms and procurement requirements. The body was created in 2010 by the OECD Committee on Consumer Policy to implement a ten-point action plan which was developed by the latter body. The portal addresses the first of these action points which is “pool information on recalls and emergency alerts on a single web site”. It also supports the working party’s aim to bring stakeholders together to: identify safety issues at an early point; explore ways to address safety concerns more efficiently and effectively; and share information on practices and policy developments. Other activities of the working party focus on: i) enhancing information sharing on policy and regulatory developments so as to alert stakeholders to key developments as they occur; ii) working towards more effective product risk assessment globally; and iii) developing an injury data portal, which would bring together data on product-related injuries onto one platform. The Working Party is co-operating closely with international organisations that are active in product safety, including the Asian-Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), GS1 (a non-profit business organisation), the International Consumer Product Safety Caucus (ICPSC), the International Consumer Policy Health & Safety Organization (ICPHSO), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). This is a One number for emergency services throughout Europe. 112 is the phone number designed to enable everyone to call emergency services anywhere in the European Union, from a fixed or a mobile phone free of charge. Would you know what number to call if you had an accident at work or at school? What if you were on holiday abroad? Wherever you are in the EU, there's just one number you need to remember for emergency services - 112. In an emergency, every second counts. You don't want to have to scrabble round to find a phone number when someone's life is at stake. That's why the EU has introduced a single number for all member countries. The same number can be used if your house is on fire in Sweden or if you have a road accident in Italy. When you call 112, a local operator will either deal with your call directly or redirect you to the emergency service you need - ambulance, police or fire brigade. You can dial 112 free of charge from a landline, mobile phone or a payphone. The calls usually work even if you're out of credit or outside the range of your mobile network.

An accurate assessment of all hazards may not be possible because they may not be immediately obvious or identifiable. Rescue personnel may be selecting protective measures based on limited information. In addition to the hazards of direct exposure, workers are also subject to dangers posed by the unstable physical environment, the stress of working in protective clothing, and the emotional trauma of the situation.

The web based guidance, Electrical Safety in Quarries explains the risks posed by electricity in quarries and gives practical guidance on equipment suitability, installation, cable management, isolating equipment, inspections and test and examination frequency. The guidance is aimed at quarry managers, rather than electrical experts and reflects the requirements of current health and safety legislation, particularly the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and Quarries Regulations 1999. It does not cover offices or other lower risk parts of quarries, where hazards are comparable to other workplaces. Further information on health and safety issues pertinent to working in quarries including quarry regulations can be found on www.hse.gov.uk/quarries/information.htm.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Health Directorate has published a contract research report on emfs in the workplace: Assessment and management of the exposure of workers to electromagnetic fields in the workplace by Microwave Consultants Ltd. Contract Research Report CRR 226/1999. This addresses the application of the National Radiological Protect Board guidelines in the workplace. HSE expects employers to prevent established adverse health effects from exposure to EMFs occurring by complying with the NRPB guidelines. In the light of advice from NRPB and international bodies that there is no firm evidence of long-term health risks HSE does not consider it appropriate to recommend further restrictions or protection measures against low-level EMF exposures. There are a number of documents (referenced also on the NRPB web site) which give further information.

- WORLD
- www.who.int/peh-emf/en
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) Globalisation of trade and the rapidly expanding use of electrical devices have focused attention on the large differences existing in standards limiting exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Disparities in EMF standards around the world have arisen from different interpretations of the scientific data that underlie all of the standards and from different philosophies for public health standards development. Differences in EMF exposure guidelines might also reflect, in part, deficiencies in communications among scientists between different regions. Large disparities in international guidelines can increase public anxiety about increasing EMF exposures from the introduction of new technologies. This web site contains details of the International EMF Project, The EMF Research Database, health topics, research tools, standards, publications and other information sources. In November 1998, WHO commenced a process of harmonization of EMF standards worldwide. Over 54 countries and 8 international organizations are involved in the International EMF Project.

ICEL approved products meet all the current product and application standards required to make sure people are able to escape safely from premises in the event of an emergency. If the power fails under any circumstances, the emergency lights will come on and operate to the required duration to allow safe evacuation of the building and provide light for the emergency services to operate effectively. But ICEL does a great deal more than just approve lighting performance, they are the leading UK authority on emergency lighting and have representatives on both British and International Standards committees. These committees set product and application standards. Compliance with these standards helps guarantee people's lives are not put at risk. Publishes guidance, offers training and links to other organisations.
- Emergency Response - DIAL 112
- BELGIUM
- http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/112
- Europa has set up a special website with details of emergency services throughout Europe operating on the 112 number.

This begins with raw material extraction and conversion, then manufacture and distribution, through to use and/or consumption. It ends with re-use, recycling of materials, energy recovery and ultimate disposal. The key aim of Life Cycle Thinking is to avoid burden shifting. This means minimising impacts at one stage of the life cycle, or in a geographic region, or in a particular impact category, while helping to avoid increases elsewhere. For example, saving energy during the use phase of a product, while not increasing the amount of material needed to provide it.
