Passive Protection: Fire   UK
www.pfpf.org

The Passive Protection Federation brings together the collective expertise of the passive fire protection industry and provides a central forum so that the Industry speaks with one voice to articulate the benefits and value of passive fire protection in the achievement of fire safe building design and construction. Passive fire protection is the primary measure integrated within the constructional fabric of a building to provide inherent fire safety and protection by responding against flame, heat and smoke to maintain the fundamental requirements of building compartmentation, structural stability, fire separation and safe means of escape. Passive fire protection measures achieve their intended purpose by raising the fire resistance of the structure, protecting the structure against the effects of fire, reducing fire spread through secondary ignition, limiting the movement of flame and smoke, and minimising the danger of fire-induced collapse or structural distortion. Passive fire protection design, incorporating passive fire protection materials, systems and assemblies, serves by fire containment to protect life, safeguard the building structure, protect assets, maintain building serviceability after fire, minimise rebuild costs, and facilitate quick business recovery and continuity.

www.virtualriskmanager.net

During 2003 and 2004 groundbreaking evaluation research undertaken by Australian Napier University's Centre for Mathematics and Statistics showed a clear statistical link between drivers' performance on the Virtual Risk Manager Road RISK assessment and their reported crash outcomes. In total the four studies involved eight, thirteen and twenty-six thousand people. This remains the only driver risk assessment validation study that we are aware of, and means that as a tool for driver risk assessment, monitoring and improvement, the Virtual Risk Manager is unique in that it has been validated through applied University research. The outcome shows a clear relationship between crashes and the assessment results for attitude, behaviour, knowledge, hazard perception and personal exposure. Road Safety: Winter Driving Tips   UK
www.rospa.com/drivertraining/winter

Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) driving advice. Skidding can generally be avoided through good observation and anticipation - and smooth use of the vehicle's controls. Your risk of skidding increases if your tyres do not have adequate tyre depth. The legal minimum tread depth for cars and light vehicles in the UK is 1.6mm, but for safety RoSPA recommends 3mm. If you are unsure about the tread depth of the tyres, get them checked by a professional. Correct tyre pressure is also very important. Under-inflated tyres will increase your fuel consumption. Over-inflated tyres will reduce your grip on the road, making it vital that you reduce your speed. It is better to avoid skidding rather than hope you can control a skid when it happens. Such a hope is rarely realised.

Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, has issued a reminder that, since October 1 2004, all its data and publications are available free of charge on the Internet. This decision has resulted in three times as many visitors to the website in November, over 40,000, compared with earlier months this year. According to the needs of the user, there are two ways to access the data through Eurostat's site. From the homepage, the "data" link takes general users to the "Key indicators on EU policy". These are predefined tables, which include "short-term indicators", "long-term indicators" and "structural indicators". For specialist users, "database" contains more detailed data, which can be extracted online and is updated daily.

Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union (EU), report on health and safety at work in the EU: "Work and health in the European Union - A statistical portrait". This report constitutes the first joint analysis of the various statistical data available at EU level. It describes the general picture of the working life including characteristics of the European labour force and overall importance of ill-health due to work-related factors. Specific chapters describe statistical data on risk factors and outcomes of safety at work, work-related diseases and psycho-social problems linked to health and safety at work. The distribution of risk factors and the frequency of accidents at work, work-related diseases and work-related problems of psychosocial nature are described by age, gender, sector of economic activity, occupation and other relevant variables. The publication is based on statistical data collected by Eurostat over the period 1994-2002. Eurostat's data are complemented with data from other sources, especially by data from the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working conditions. The data mainly cover the 15 Member States of the EU, but some preliminary data are available for trends in the incidence of accidents at work in the acceding and candidate countries.

Stress   UK
www.gone2lunch.com

Gone2Lunch is a UK campaign to make sure you get your proper entitlement of a stress-free, private lunch hour at work. It is a fact that the British work harder and longer than any other nation in the European Union. Not only that, the culture has resulted in the creation of a working environment where lunch is deemed only for "wimps", and a well-earned breather dismissed as little more than "slacking off". Aggressive management and the boom in out-of-town business parks confine more and more people to their desks. Little wonder that the last refuge of relaxation is a quick Web surf or email session during a snatched 5 minutes here or there. Now even this is under threat as "Big Brother"-style employers remove these rights of Internet/email access, subjecting employees to constant surveillance and invasions of privacy.
