The Passive Protection Federation brings together the collective expertise of the passive fire protection industry and provides a central forum so that the Industry speaks with one voice to articulate the benefits and value of passive fire protection in the achievement of fire safe building design and construction. Passive fire protection is the primary measure integrated within the constructional fabric of a building to provide inherent fire safety and protection by responding against flame, heat and smoke to maintain the fundamental requirements of building compartmentation, structural stability, fire separation and safe means of escape. Passive fire protection measures achieve their intended purpose by raising the fire resistance of the structure, protecting the structure against the effects of fire, reducing fire spread through secondary ignition, limiting the movement of flame and smoke, and minimising the danger of fire-induced collapse or structural distortion. Passive fire protection design, incorporating passive fire protection materials, systems and assemblies, serves by fire containment to protect life, safeguard the building structure, protect assets, maintain building serviceability after fire, minimise rebuild costs, and facilitate quick business recovery and continuity.

Control of the Hazards Associated with the Transport and Bulk Storage of Fireworks. This website describes a European Union (EU) funded project, CHAF, which aims to provide a better understanding of critical conditions that give rise to explosions in packaged fireworks, and improved methods of predicting performance in large scale storage. Annual sales of fireworks in the EU amount to tens of thousands of tonnes and similar quantities are held in storage. This project will provide a framework for the safe storage of bulk fireworks which will have direct benefits to the EU in terms of improving worker safety and reducing the work-related hazards to which members of the public are exposed. Also, reduction of the severity of large scale fireworks storage accidents will have beneficial environmental effects in terms of minimising the release of toxic fumes and reducing off site blast damage. Hamilton: Alice   USA
www.cdc.gov/niosh/hamilton/hamhist.html

Alice Hamilton, M.D., was "the first American physician to devote her life to the practice of industrial medicine." Born into a prominent, but financially-pressed family of Fort Wayne, Indiana, she was devout and altruistic from an early age. After graduation from medical school at the University of Michigan in 1893, she accepted a position teaching pathology and histology at the Women's Medical College of Northwestern University in Chicago. Perhaps more importantly, she also moved into Jane Addams' Hull House, and there provided a well-baby clinic for residents of the settlement's neighborhood. Seeing the problems of poor working class families at close range, her compassion and professional interest were inexorably drawn to the many victims of work-related diseases and injuries. Legislation requires that vehicles and load movements that exceed standard dimensions need to be pre-notified to police, highway and bridge authorities, a process that currently involves millions of faxes being sent every year. ESDAL is streamlining this process using the latest technology, providing welcome relief to everyone involved in the movement of abnormal indivisible loads. Using ESDAL's innovative mapping system, Hauliers can easily identify the route they need to take, and get full details of all the organisations they will need to notify before making the movement.

Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment: restrictions (RoHS)   BELGIUM

European Commission Directorate General Environment has day-to-day management of the site http://ec.europa.eu/environment/index_en.htm. The European Commission always publishes its official documents in all the EU languages (see the EUR-Lex database on http://eur-lex.europa.eu). The Europa site also offers you much more information on the Commission's work, including its environment policy, in a variety of languages (see http://europa.eu/pol/env/index_en.htm). Feel free to contact us for any further information and/or details you may require at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/contact/contact_en.htm. Directives 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) and 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) are designed to tackle the fast increasing waste stream of electrical and electronic equipment and complements European Union measures on landfill and incineration of waste. Increased recycling of electrical and electronic equipment will limit the total quantity of waste going to final disposal. Producers will be responsible for taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment. This will provide incentives to design electrical and electronic equipment in an environmentally more efficient way, which takes waste management aspects fully into account. Consumers will be able to return their equipment free of charge. In order to prevent the generation of hazardous waste, Directive 2002/95/EC requires the substitution of various heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium) and brominated flame retardants (polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)) in new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market from 1 July 2006.

Heat Stress Assessment Methodology     UK
www.hse.gov.uk/research/index.htm

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published an important research report developing a method for assessing stress caused by exposure to heat in the in the workplace. The research concludes that large parts of UK industry have difficulty in managing and assessing heat stress. It has long been known that work related heat stress could compromise health and safety and lead directly or indirectly to worker injury and death. As a result the HSE sponsored a research project to ensure that developments in heat stress assessment were evaluated and documented in a valid and usable methodology. A framework was formulated for the design, development and evaluation of such a methodology. This framework consisted of three stages; an Exploratory Stage, a Design and Development Stage and an Evaluation Stage. This resulted in the development of a practical heat stress assessment methodology. Copies of The development of a practical heat stress assessment methodology for use in UK industry RR 008 ISBN 0 7176 2533 8, price £25, are available from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2WA, UK.
