Aggression and bullying in workplaces leads to people leaving organisations with subsequent loss of corporate knowledge

May 2017

Any kind of conflict – including aggression, bullying, cyber bulling, harassment, verbal and non-verbal behaviour etc. that often leads to those who are suffering deciding to leave their organisations, sometimes with very short notice. Downstream this is very costly for the organisations that employ them. The people who are leaving are taking with them their knowledge of the business, which in many cases can be many years of experience. Added to this is the cost of recruiting new staff, training them and often waiting some time for the staff members to be fully competent.

Although people’s ideas of standards of acceptable behaviour are likely to differ, it is vital that consensus is reached in each workplace. Tackling and preventing conflict and stress effectively is a responsibility for management under health and safety legislation in the UK and in many other countries.
