Using Naloxone to Reverse Opioid Overdose in the Workplace: Information for Employers and Workers: Latest US information

November 2018
by Sheila Pantry OBE

The opioid crisis continues to affect the USA, including workplaces. On 11 October 2018 the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released a new factsheet, Using Naloxone to Reverse Opioid Overdose in the Workplace: Information for Employers and Workers, as a resource for workplaces that are considering implementing a naloxone program.

Workplaces are increasingly becoming sites where overdoses are occurring, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics finding that between 2013 and 2016, overdose deaths at work from non-medical use of drugs and alcohol increased by at least 38% annually.

This new NIOSH factsheet provides an overview of opioids and naloxone. It also gives employers and workers a series of questions to consider when looking at whether a naloxone program in their workplace is appropriate, as well as information about resources needed to implement and maintain such a program.

You can learn more about how NIOSH is working to confront the opioid crisis on their website and by joining them for a special webinar on November 6th from 1:00 – 2:30 pm ET, New Insights into the Opioid Crisis and Work: Important Information for Workers and Employers.

NIOSH says, “Please share this new factsheet with your partners, including employer and worker groups, who may benefit from this information”.
