Todwick Ramblers Club

The Club's July 'Away Ramble' started from Langsett in good sunny conditions. It was a 7 mile circular route providing a variety of landscapes which included views of the reservoir, open moor, and traditional stone walled fields. The ramble passed through the hamlet of Midhopestones, and the opportunity was taken to explore its tiny ancient church, before returning to Langsett, via an old mineral line.

On Sunday August 10th our well attended local ramble commenced with a bus ride to Aughton, from where we headed off using meadowland footpaths to Ulley village. On leaving Ulley the farming landscape changed as we headed towards Aston through a variety of ripening crops and rampant vegetation. Leaving Aston our route continued passing Fiddleneck pond, Nickerwood Farm and over the M1 motorway. The last leg back towards Todwick was by way of Upper Common Farm and Goosecarr Lane.

Time to get savvy about home safety - How to keep your kids safe at home... in the holidays and beyond

Paddling pools, plugs and painkillers - you probably have them all in your home but did you know each one could be a risk to your child? Most drowning among younger children (under five) happens at home in either the bath or the garden and a baby can drown in as little as 5cm of water.

Home is where the heart is and yours is probably the last place you expect a child to come to harm but accidents in the home are in fact the biggest cause of injuries to kids under five. With the holidays upon us it's the ideal time to look at your home from your child's viewpoint.

By taking a step back and looking at your home from a small child's point of view, suddenly everything can look very different. Medicines lying in handbags, cleaning products in unlocked cupboards and stairs without gates are all potential dangers. For any parent, the prospect of an accident involving your child can be frightening but as a new government campaign shows, there are small steps everyone can take to make a big difference.

The major new campaign from the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF) is encouraging parents and grandparents to take simple steps to reduce the risks to kids in the home, whilst not wrapping them in cotton wool. As part of the campaign a new website has been launched (www.direct.gov.uk/childsafety) with advice and other sources of help for parents and those looking after children.

Dr Hilary Jones, medical broadcaster, GP and father, has lent his support to the campaign and says:

"There are lots of potential hazards in the home, including hot drinks which can cause scalds, stairs without guards which can lead to falls and medicines or cleaning products which can poison a child. It's difficult to watch a child all the time but by taking a few minutes to see your home through your child's eyes, you could help prevent the trauma of an accident".

Here are ten easy ways to make your home safer for children...

  1. Look at things from a child's point of view - get down on your hands and knees if necessary and see what hazards you can spot from down there. Then you'll see the painkillers in your handbag and the bleach under the sink.
  2. When running a bath use cold water first and top up with hot - or even better, fit a thermostatic mixing valve to your hot tap to control the temperature
  3. When using a paddling pool in the summer always supervise young children and empty it straight away after use - either put it away or turn it upside down.
  4. Keep all hot drinks away from young children and never hold a baby and a hot drink at the same time
  5. Always try to change a baby's nappy on the floor
  6. Fit safety gates to stop babies climbing stairs or falling down them
  7. Always use a five-point harness to secure your baby in his or her highchair or when out in a pushchair
  8. Keep medicines and cleaning products out of sight and reach
  9. Check electrical, plugs, sockets and flexes for scorching or fraying and get them repaired by a registered electrician if need be
  10. Fit carbon monoxide alarms whenever there is a naked flame, for example, gas boilers or open fires

To find out more about child safety, including advice and information on how to make your home safe, www.direct.gov.uk/childsafety or contact your local Sure Start Children's Centre.

Parents and carers can also get support and advice from local Sure Start Children Centres by calling 0800 678 33 88 to find their nearest centre.

The Staying Safe Action Plan (published on 5 February 2008) sets out the Government's commitments for improving children and young people's safety (PSA 13). This is available at www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/stayingsafe

Todwick Village Hall Management Committee - Notice of forthcoming works

From 28 July 2008, for a period of about 2 weeks, the brickwork of the original part of Todwick Village Hall will be re-pointed.

This work is necessary to prevent rainwater entering the building. Part of the hall will have scaffolding around it and there may one some noise and dust during the daytime, particularly during the early part of the work. The contractors have assured us that any disruption to neighbouring property and hall users will be kept to a minimum.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this may cause you. We trust that you will bear with us through this interim period in the maintenance of this historic part of Todwick.

Trustees, Todwick Village Hall

TODWICK WI

The Todwick branch of the WI has celebrated 50 years in existence with a buffet and social evening at the village hall. It was nice to see four founder members, several past presidents and members of the South Yorkshire Federation who all attended. The Wells Singers entertained throughout the evening and the Worksop Guardian who were present printed a half page article including photographs in a recent edition. It was truly a memorable evening.

We are always looking to recruit new members and a warm welcome awaits any ladies in the area who would like to meet new friends, enjoy social evenings, outings and interesting speakers. We meet on the 1st Thursday each month in the village hall and our diary for the rest of 2008 includes the following:

  • 3rd July The collecting and history of button hooks
  • 10th July Strawberry Tea in a local garden - tickets available at £3.50
  • 4th Sept "Don't Point Your Feet" - a talk by Pat Flinders
  • 2nd Oct Social Evening
  • 16th Oct Theatre Visit
  • 6th Nov Research your family history with local expert Alan Turner
  • 4th Dec Christmas Party with magical entertainment by Brian Vardy

Please give us a try. You can come to 3 meetings before deciding whether or not to join us but we think you will like us enough to become a member. We look forward to seeing you. Please ring Eileen on 770050 for more information.

TODWICK MUSIC BY MOONLIGHT AND FUNDAY EVENTS 14 and 15 June 2008

Despite the cold June night (albeit with Moonlight) about 130 people enjoyed the Jazz Preservation Society Band programme of music on Saturday, 14 June 2008. at the Music by Moonlight. The supper tables were splendid and some people even danced!

The weather was much kinder on Sunday, 15 June 2008 at the FUNDAY. Over 250 people came during the afternoon to enjoy the various events and displays that included five-a-side football games organised by Dermot O'Farrell, competition games organised by Rob Lincoln, two bouncy castles, the striker, fun puzzles organised by the Ramblers' Club, face painting, lucky bran tubs. The Bowls Club put on lessons for those wishing to "have a go" and learn about bowling, Lloyd Jones provided the music and the PA system. Joe's ice cream was enjoyed by many.

There were interesting exhibitions put on by the Todwick Craft Group, Water Stars, Sing and Sign, Neighbourhood Watch, the Chesterfield Canal group, Save the Children Fund - all very enjoyable and added to the afternoon's entertainment. Sandra Barker did a stalwart job on both the Music by Moonlight event and during the Funday in the Raffle draw. Members of the WI and the Mothers Union served free of charge refreshments that were also very much enjoyed by everyone! Thanks to all who took part including those behind scenes - the gazebo erectors, Julian - Todwick's Handyman who did a lot of transporting of tables etc and clearing up - without all these efforts none of this would happen... just shows that Community Spirit is alive and well in Todwick!

Todwick Ramblers Club

On bank holiday Monday the 26th May ten members meet at a very windy but dry Hardwick Hall for a 6 mile walk. From the car park adjacent to the Hall we passed the old hall and made our way through the park to Millers Pond. After a short climb we left Hardwick Park and made our way through Ault Hunknall before proceeding along field paths to the pretty village of Rawthorne. We then followed the Rawthorne Trail to arrive back at our start point via Lady Spencer's wood.

On Sunday 8th June eight members plus two new members set off from the Village Hall for a 6 ½ mile circular walk. The day was extremely warm with clear blue skies. We made our way through Vessey Close Farm, Brampton Common and Hardwick Hall Farm before returning to Todwick. The field crops looking very healthy, with the trees in full leaf made for delightful scenery.

Our next walk on Monday 23rd June will be of 6 mile around Blyth, Hodsock and Old Carlton Village. Meet at Hodsock Priory at 9.30 AM.

Todwick Ramblers Club

On April 28th 12 Club members met outside the Clumber Cricket ground for a 6 mile circular ramble through Clumber Park. The route crossed Clumber Bridge to take a woodland track as far as the Normanton Gates. Here the terrain changed to an arable landscape with a well defined footpath taking us down to Hardwick village, and a bright and breezy lunch stop. The ramble was completed by a meander through Hardwick Wood before returning to the Cricket ground via the Information centre.

The Club's local ramble on the 11th May had the benefit of a sunny spring day, which highlighted the picturesque qualities of the 6 mile route. This included the Chesterfield Canal and countryside around Anston Grange Farm, before returning through South Anston back to Todwick.

Todwick Ramblers Club

Hardwick Hall was the destination on 17th March for fourteen club members who enjoyed a 7 mile circular ramble through the surrounding pastoral countryside of the Hardwick estate along with a visit to Taversal village.

Our local April ramble on Sunday 13th started from South Anston and included a visit to Hawke wood and Old Spring wood. Both woodlands were a delight to the eye with cowslips and wood sorrel mingling with a carpet of wild garlic. Swathes of bluebells in Old Spring wood welcomed in our delayed springtime. We returned to Todwick via the tow path of the Chesterfield canal and the Kiveton Park footpath network.

Todwick Women's Institute is 50 years old in May 2008

It is Todwick Women's Institute's 50th Birthday in May of this year and on the 5th June 2008 we are celebrating with a Birthday Party in the Village Hall. We are hoping that members past and present will join us for for a cup of tea and 'nibbles' on this special occasion. We are also hoping to be entertained by the Wells Choir.

There is also a Ploughman's Lunch in the Village Hall on the 28th April 2008 at a cost of £4.50 including a pudding! The lunch will be starting at 12.00 noon until 2.00 p.m. Tickets are available from Eileen (tel. 770050) or any of the members.

A Short History of The Trysting Tree at Kiveton Park

A Short History of The Trysting Tree at Kiveton Park by John T Wells establishes that the Trysting Tree is in Kiveton Park which was the estate of the Osbornes (The Duke of Leeds) for generations.

The original tree was on the edge of a piece of ancient Woodland known locally as "The Bluebell Wood". This tree was badly storm damaged at the turn of the century and the remains were cut down and taken to the Duke of Leeds agents house in Lodge Hill and placed in the garden there. It is thought that Sir Walter Scott's novel "Ivanhoe" lists places such as Kiveton, Steetley, Bedgrave and other local places as settings for some of the scenes in the book. Kiveton was therefore classed as situated in Sherwood Forest.

To purchase a copy of this very interesting and informative book contact J T Wells, 228 Wales Road, Kiveton Park, Sheffield S26 5RE. His telephone number is 01909 771340, or alternatively buy a copy at Todwick Village Post Office price £2.00.

National Grid to replace all gas pipes in Todwick

The National Grid are now responsible for the gas pipework under Todwick.

They intend to start a programme of work in Todwick to replace all the old iron pipes with plastic. The work will commence in the first week of April and will last 6 Months!

Because there will be major disruption to the households in Todwick, National Grid will be writing to all households and they also intend to hold an "open evening" on 27 March 2008 to explain their plan of work (a 20 minute presentation) and to answer any questions.

The doors will open in the Village Hall at 6.00pm for a 6.30 start on 27 March 2008. There will be a 20 to 30 minute presentation followed by a forum answering any questions. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served.

The National Grid representative is Paul Cowen 07792 159939

Todwick Ramblers Club

On Sunday March 9th ten ramblers journeyed to Laughton to walk a 6 mile countryside route back to Todwick, via Brampton en le Morthen.

The cool but sunny weather allowed excellent early views over Sheffield and Rotherham. This provided a complete contrast to our 19th February walk where the route had been shrouded in thick mist, giving a countryside scenario coloured white with hoar frost.

New countryside furniture was evident between Laughton and Brampton. Unfortunately, a number of recently installed high-rise stiles had not been constructed to facilitate easy boundary cross-overs for our petite lady members.

Todwick Ramblers Club

On Sunday January 13th twelve club members decided to ignore the negative weather forecast and set out on a circular ramble led by Terry Calladine that included North Anston, Dewidales Wood, and Anston Stones Wood. In the event the prevailing weather gave good walking conditions with a drying breeze, high cloud, and a total absence of rain thus contributing to a very pleasant 4 hour ramble.

The club's next walk will be on Sunday 10th February 2008 led by Terry Calladine. Approx. distance 6 miles. Final details of the route will be posted on the Village Hall notice board and Todwick Post Office.

In addition, on Tuesday 19th February we are having a pub lunch at the Duke of Leeds Arms in Wales which will be preceded by a circular walk from Wales Church commencing at 10.00hrs. For further details contact Jim Tompkin. 01909 770700

They are now organised by Jim Tompkin who can be contacted on 770700 for further information.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms... and fire alarms - preparing for Autumn and Winter

Todwick Neighbourhood Watch can supply you with Carbon Monoxide Alarms which sound an audible alarm if the gas is present. Comparable alarms on the open market are £19.99 upwards to £30, BUT through Todwick Neighbourhood Watch we can supply you with an alarm at £18. To obtain an alarm, please telephone Norman Anderson on 01909 770130 and we will deliver one to your door in Todwick - at no extra charge. Leaflets outlining the problems of carbon monoxide are also available free of charge on the same telephone number.

If you are over 60 years of age, free safety checks are available for registered disabled, chronically sick, deaf or blind who join their own Gas suppliers Priority Service Register.

As Autumn and Winter approaches REMEMBER to have all your gas appliances checked by a CORGI registered installer. Credentials and identification badges should also be checked prior to agreeing any work. Consider having the chimney swept to clear soot, brick debris and birds nests. Carbon Monoxide can also occur in caravans and motor-homes with heaters, so an annual check of gas appliances is advised.

A carbon monoxide alarm can be used abroad. So, here are one or two simple precautions to protect yourself and your family from being part of the 600 people each year who are taken to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.

And do not forget to check your fire alarms - are they working OK - or do they need a new battery! Please be safe, not sorry!

News of Todwick Village events: Funday, Music by Moonlight, Gardens, Historic Trails and UK Village of the Year competition - July 2007

It certainly all happened in July 2007 in Todwick... as well as the Church Garden Fete on 7 July 2007 there were lots of activities...

Sunday, 15 July 2007 was the Todwick Funday - despite the rains many people turned out for the afternoon event. The only things that did not happen were the opportunity to use the Bouncy Castles and run in the races, but other scheduled events took place - Todwick Toddlers Play group, Guides offered Bran Tub and other games, a number of five-aside football games took place, there was face painting, a striker game, Save the Children Fund lucky dip, Neighbourhood Watch got 5 more members, Weight Watchers gave advice, Todwick Crafts Group put on a show, WI and Mothers Union served free refreshments that were enjoyed by all, and Lloyd Jones provided the PA system and the music. Sponsorship came from a number of organisations.

Music by Moonlight free evening on 15 July 2007 was transferred to the Village Hall due to the inclement weather - which gave many people the chance to see the wonderful rebuild and refurbishment that has taken place as well as having a great musical evening of traditional jazz played by the Jazz Preservation Society Band. Well attended but not as many people as in 2006!

Sunday, 29 July 2007 was Todwick's Gardens and Historic Trail day which was blessed with lovely sunshine and was very well attended. There were two starting points - the Church Hall and the Village Hall that had a number of exhibitions - there was an extensive display produced by Philip Robbins of Memorabilia, photos, maps, albums of weddings that had taken place in Todwick; Jim Tompkin presented the Ramblers Group; Norman and Virginia Anderson the Neighbourhood Watch Group and enrolled 5 more members and 3 street organisers; WI had an exhibition; there was also a DVD and display of "How to make a well dressing picture" - hopefully this will inspire people to make such a picture for Todwick another year? There were free refreshments and in both Halls there were baskets of flowers for raffle that raised a sum of £31.20 for each of our local Hospices. As well as walking around the village seeing the Todwick Moat, Wall (c1700), ancient Church (1086 - and mentioned in the Doomsday Book), Robin Hood's Trysting Tree, people were able to see inside the gardens of Harry Beat, Brian and Christine Mullins, Mabel and William Hextall and see the wonderful panoramic views from Clive and Sheila Pantry's garden. A beautiful Trail map was sponsored by Todwick Early Years School who also offered to show the very extensive Todwick web site www.todwick.org.uk. More gardens next year please!

UK Village of the Year 2007 competition - Todwick was one of four Yorkshire Villages selected to go forward in this national event which only happens every 3 years. A number of presentations were given in the Village Hall to the Judges who came on 21 July 2007 to hear and also take a tour of the Village. Whilst the Judges were very impressed, the overall Yorkshire winner was Woodsetts - we wish them every success.

All the above events were organised by Sheila Pantry OBE who sends many, many thanks to everyone involved - workers, those attending and our sponsors.

Todwick Village Hall Rebuilding starts 27 November 2006

The start date for the Todwick Village Hall rebuilding will commence on Monday, 27 November 2006.

The selected contractor is GFP Construction of Anston.

The formal contract will be signed at the Village Hall Christmas Fayre at 2pm Saturday 25 November 2006

Really good news for Todwick Village.

Bonfire and Fireworks Display 2006

Regrettably, the Parish Council will not be holding a bonfire/fireworks display this year.

Health, safety and welfare controls on such events have become increasingly onerous.

All those involved must be adequately trained and it has not been possible to attract sufficient volunteers willing to undertake this.

Many councils are now employing approved contractors. This is very expensive and considered inappropriate when the Council's priority is to assist in funding the imminent improvements to the village hall.

Todwick Neighbourhood Watch Alert - 10th October 2006

PLEASE BE AWARE

Over the last few weeks there has been a noticeable increase in burglary, attempted burglary, theft of cars and theft from cars in Todwick village.

In conjunction with the Crime Reduction Unit of South Yorkshire Police, we advise all residents to be aware of the above crimes.

Thieves are particularly stealing expensive motor vehicles, and high value plasma/wide screen TVs. They are also looking for any easy pickings elsewhere.

The Police advise you to close your curtains / blinds if the TV is visible from the road.

Please do not leave house keys or car keys where they are visible, especially in the lock.

For further information please contact Dean Tinker of the South Yorkshire Police Crime Reduction Unit on 01709 832662 or Norman Anderson of Todwick Neighbourhood Watch Scheme on 01909 770130.

Todwick Neighbourhood Watch

The Todwick Neighbourhood Watch Scheme began in July 2006 and now has over 200 of the 800 Todwick households signed into the scheme. A clear signal that for our village, law and order is an issue we care about. Our scheme is part of the South Yorkshire Neighbourhood Watch Association and South Yorkshire Police - we have strong allies within our organisation.

It was lovely to see so many people and we hope to see you again - watch this space for further interesting events!

Todwick Village Hall modernisation March 2006

After much effort, over a period of several years, in trying to secure funding for the modernisation of Todwick Village Hall, the Village Hall Management Committee has been successful in securing funding and are now planning to start building works on the modernisation of Todwick Village Hall in the coming weeks.

Following an application to the Yorkshire Rural Community Council to the Rural Target Fund, which is part of the Objective 1 Programme for South Yorkshire and funded by EAGGF and DEFRA, the Village Hall modernisation project has been awarded £195,950.

That award, together with the sum of £55,000 previously accumulated by Todwick Parish Council, and additional monies achieved through fund-raising by the Village Hall Management Committee, has generated sufficient capital for the project to go ahead without further delay.

The building works will include demolition of part of the Village Hall and the creation of new accommodation and amenities.

On announcement of the news, Jean Leah, Secretary and Trustee of the Village Hall Management Committee, said "We are delighted that the Yorkshire Rural Community Council has given its support and helped secure Rural Target Funding for our project which is the realisation of much determination and hard work by both past and current members of Todwick's Village Hall Management Committee and the Todwick Parish Council. We look forward to its completion for the benefit of the community".

Problems with vermin

As a resident of Todwick it has been brought to my attention by various neighbours that we are experiencing an increase of rats and mice in Todwick. People have contacted pest control companies who have dealt with the problem, but I feel it will never get any better while people are throwing bread and various amounts of waste food on their gardens. Could you please make this known in the next news letter that while ever they think they are feeding the birds, they are not. All they are doing is making Todwick like the Ritz for the rats and mice.
