TODWICK ON THE INTERNET -
Todwick now has it's own web site which gives information on the village past and present, the various organisations
including the Parish Council, events, etc. It can be visited at www.todwick.org.uk. It will be
regularly updated, so if you want it to include information about your organisation's future plans or
coming events contact Sheila Pantry on 01909-771024 or email sp@sheilapantry.com.
THE 2000/2001 PRECEPT -
The Parish Precept will remain at the same rate as in 1999/2000 - i.e. £18,650, of which £13,650 is for normal expenditure
and £5,000 to be set aside towards the eventual refurbishment of the Village Hall. This money is
collected by Rotherham Borough Council with their Council Tax and passed on to Todwick in
two instalments.
VILLAGE HALL- At
the February meeting the Parish Council resolved to express its extreme concern at the lack of progress by the Village Hall
Committee towards the refurbishment of the Hall. While the Council can subsidise or pay for repairs
or improvements - and has frequently done so over the years - under the Trust Deed the
Committee are the Management Trustees and as such are legally responsible for the actual
management of the Hall.
CHILDREN'S PLAY AREAS -
A recent safety inspection of the Children's Playground and the Play Area on the Recreation Ground has been carried out to
establish what improvements need to be carried out to equipment, surfacing, etc. to bring
them up to EEC Standards. A report has just been submitted and will be considered by the Parish
Council prior to seeking a substantial grant under the Landfill Tax Scheme to enable the
necessary improvements to be carried out.
MOBILE INFORMATION SERVICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE -
Organised by Rotherham Borough Council on similar lines to the Health &
Benefits Bus, this will soon be visiting Todwick on a regular basis. Dates, times and venue are not yet
known so please watch for notices in the Post Office and the notice board outside the Village Hall.
ANNUAL PARISH ASSEMBLY-
This will be held on Tuesday 25 April in the Village Hall, commencing at 7.30 pm. It is your opportunity to hear
reports from the Chairman and the Clerk on the year's work of the Council as well as the financial
report and accounts - i.e. to learn how your money has been spent. You will be able to comment on
these and to raise any matter of concern.
PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS -The
March meeting will be held in the Village Hall on Tuesday 28 March commencing at 7.30 pm. In April the Council will
meet at 7.00 pm immediately to the Annual Assembly and will reconvene after that if necessary
to complete the business. After April the Council will meet on the last Tuesday of each month
except August. At every Council meeting there is an Open Session at 8.30 pm when members
of the public may ask questions or comment on matters of concern. Future dates are 30 May,
27 June and 25 July. A reminder of subsequent dates will be given in the July issue of The Informer.
THE WALL - The
Parish Council has failed in its attempt to get the old wall which was the
boundary to Kiveton Hall adjacent to the footpath to South
Anston listed by English Heritage, as it was not considered to be of sufficient historical
interest. The Council will now consider if there is any other way in which its restoration can be achieved
- it is intended that this should not be the end of the matter.
VILLAGE HANDYMAN -
A contract for general maintenance has been granted to Mr J. Cooper so in future you may see him carrying out various duties
around the village. If you become aware of anything that you consider requires attention
please contact Councillor Les Waller, 13 The Pastures (tel: 770819) to whom Mr Cooper reports.
FOOTPATH WALKS -
These continue to take place on the second Sunday of each month, leaving the Village Hall at 10 am. They are led by Mr Pat
Wilson (tel: 771319) from whom further information is available. If you meet with any
difficulties or obstructions on any footpath while walking independently please inform either him or
Councillor Mary Gregory (Tel: 01909 770703) who will report the matter to Rotherham Borough Council's
Rights of Way Officer.
SOUTH ROTHERHAM COMMUNITY CHEST -
The Bowls Club has recently received a grant of £500 towards improving car parking facilities on their
site. Are any other village organisations missing out on grants - a notice about these has long been
displayed in the Village Hall.
USEFUL TELEPHONE NUMBERS -
A list of Rotherham Borough Council's Departmental telephone numbers appears in the local directory, but ones
which you may find particularly useful are: Street Lighting (to report lights not working)
01707-822960; Public Rights of Way 01709-82293I; and in cases of emergency outside office
hours for all services 01709-5011306. Police numbers are 0114 220 220 for all non-emergency
calls, and to contact our local police officers, Tina Jones and Howard Saul, 01709-832621 but you
may have to leave a message for them.
CAN YOU HELP TO MAKE TODWICK A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE?
Do you have any overhanging vegetation getting in the way of pedestrians?
Can you clear weeds from the footway or gully outside your property?
Rotherham Borough Council only clear the gullies every 2
years, and except for Kiveton Lane the mechanical road sweeper only goes round once a year,
so if you could look after your own frontage it would help the general appearance of the
village.
Also if you do not leave any litter yourself could you
pick up any outside your home? Empty drink cans are always to be found.
Could you plant any bulbs, etc on the grass verge if you
have one?
Do you have any unwanted shrubs (the birds are quite
helpful in providing these) which you could pass on to the Environmental Action Group? Or if you
would really like to improve the village would you consider joining the Group?

And if you are one of the dog owners who allow yours to
foul the footways you certainly can help. Recent complaints have stressed that this is a worse
problem than it has ever been - including from people who have lived here over 30 years
and have been reduced to hosing down the footway and putting up Polite Notices!

PLANTING OF THE MILLENNIUM YEW TREE IN THE CHURCHYARD
after the Morning Service (c 11.15 am)
1st May 2000 A MILLENNIUM PILGRIMAGE
Organised by the clergy of the seven local parishes.
This is scheduled to start from St Joseph's Church at
Dinnington at 10 am, going on to South Anston Methodist Church (11 am), Todwick Church (noon),
Wales Church & lunch (1 pm), Harthill Church (2.30 pm), Thorpe Salvin Church (3.30 pm),
and finishing at Woodsetts Church at 5 pm. It is hoped to keep as closely as possible to
these times to enable people to join the walk en route. There will be a short 5 minute service at
each Church. Walkers are encouraged to obtain sponsorship to raise money for either Christian
Aid or Cafod. Leaflets will be available shortly, together with registration and sponsorship forms,
from the Church or the Post Office.
Cars will be arranged if required to take walkers to a
start point or to collect them for their return journey. If you wish for any further information contact

25th JUNE 2000 A SPORTS & FUN DAY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Sponsored by the Parish Council, to be held on the
Recreation Ground, probably from noon. The help of all the various sporting organisations and of
others involved with young people in Todwick is urgently required to help in the planning and
running of this event. At the initial meeting only the Bowls Club, the Brownies and the Cricket
Club were present!
The Parish Council would like this to be a day to remember
for young people, but this can only be achieved with your help. And if you do not belong to
any organisation but would like to offer your help it would be very much appreciated. A meeting
will shortly be arrange to plan the day - in the meantime please contact Councillor Mary Gregory
(Tel: 01909 770703 or 13 Manor Way) who will let you have details as soon as possible or any
other information you may wish for.
1st JULY 2000 GARDEN FETE & BOWLS
Garden Fete in the Church Grounds from 1.30 pm. During
June the Brownies will be collecting round the village for the Tombola & Pantry stalls, and
as usual there will be a team of Raffle ticket sellers visiting you. Please give them your support
- the ambition of the Raffle Organiser is to raise £ 1000 this year!
A 9-DAY BOWLS EVENT
Organised by the Bowls Club.
To include sessions for children and non-members and an
inter-parish contest. Dates not yet confirmed - please look out for notices.
FISHING IN OCTOBER
AN INTER-PARISH COMPETITION is
being arranged for Teams of four from each of the seven local parishes. The organiser urgently needs the name of a
contact in Todwick - if you are one of our village fishermen please contact Mary Gregory (as
above) who will pass on your details and Mr G. V. Butt will be in touch with you.

Local Artists; Barn Dance, Pea & Pie Supper in the evening. Sunday morning: Football Event & Non-stop
Fun Cricket; Displays all day as on Saturday; Children's Party, Brass Band, Morris Dancers
& Tug-o-War in the afternoon. Finishing in the evening with an Open Air Service, Lamb Roast
Picnic/Music.

29/30 JULY 2000 - THORPE SALVIN GARDEN TRAIL
THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES WHICH HAVE BEEN
ORGANISED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE SEVEN PARISHES MILLENNIUM COMMITTEE WHICH CAME INTO
BEING IN 1998 TO COORDINATE THE EFFORTS BEING MADE LOCALLY. PARISHES REPRESENTED ON
THE COMMITTEE ARE ANSTON, DINNINGTON, HARTHILL, THORPE SALVIN,
TODWICK, WALES AND WOODSETTS.
IT WAS ORIGINALLY ENVISAGED THAT THERE MIGHT BE MORE
INTER-PARISH EVENTS, BUT IT BECAME APPARENT THAT IN MOST CASES PARISHES WERE BETTER
ABLE TO `DO THEIR OWN THING'. THERE IS GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT THE FORMATION OF
THE COMMITTEE HAS BEEN VERY VALUABLE IN STRENGTHENING RELATIONS BETWEEN
LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND THERE IS A STRONG FEELING THAT THE COMMITTEE SHOULD NOT GO
OUT OF EXISTENCE AFTER THIS YEAR - EVEN THOUGH IT WILL NEED A NEW TITLE.
TODWICK IS REPRESENTED ON THE COMMITTEE BY COUNCILLORS
MARY GREGORY AND JOHN MOSLEY AND THE CLERK, ROD WALKER, FROM ANY OF WHOM
FURTHER INFORMATION MAY BE OBTAINED.
