Todwick Environment: Wild Birds

Todwick Environmental Action Group (TEAG)

In existence formally since 1997, although work has been ongoing since 1989 by enthusiasts, the Todwick Environment Action Group TEAG seeks to beautify Todwick Village. Recent projects which have been completed are:

1. Planters, trees and seat installed in the centre of the village near the shops.

2. Planters containing Todwick name at the three entrances to the village.

3. Establishment and maintenance of flower beds around the village.

4. Planting of bulbs on the verges on various lanes and in the Children's swing park near the Church.

5. For the last two years a Christmas tree and lights in the village centre.

  • Secret Gardens of Todwick visit Sunday 16th April 2000

As part of the Millennium celebrations the Todwick Environment Action Group (TEAG) organised an "open day" on Sunday 16th April, in co-operation with some residents of Todwick who are willing to open their Spring gardens for other gardening enthusiasts to see.

Details available from the Todwick Post office and Newsagency or contact any of the TEAG members.

  • Launch of the Todwick Village Millennium Garden and Gates Project

The Millennium Garden and Gates were officially opened on Monday, 3 January 2000 by Miss Mary Gregory, Todwick Parish Councillor who said that everywhere people talk about "why don't they do something about it" without thinking who "they" really are. But in Todwick, a small group of people - The Todwick Environment Action Group had really shown that "they" care.

From small beginnings started over 12 years ago by planting daffodils around the village, there is now a small group who have established planters at each of the entrances to Todwick, created a small garden in the centre of the village, redesigned the flower beds area around the telephone box, also organised the new Notice Board near the Village Hall, and especially to commemorate the start of the year 2000 had now created with funding from The Millennium Festival Awards for All, the new Millennium Garden and Gates at the entrance to the Recreation Ground.

Four Todwick schoolboys Adam Booth, 11, Adam Mason 12, Steven Longden, 12, and Jack Booth, 9, who have raised money by car washing, as part of the South Yorkshire Police Lifestyle Project, and donated the funds to the Todwick Environmental Action Group, were also at the launch and "dug in" two of the trees.

A number of local firms have been involved in various stages of carrying out tasks or supplying items for the project -

    • Richard Barker - wall builder plus the Housley girls from the village who helped him!

    • Keith - Godfrey Gardens - trees, shrubs, bulbs, plants, & seats

    • Andy Blackburn, Thorpe Salvin Nurseries - shrubs, conifers and bulbs

    • Ibstock Building Products Ltd - stone blocks

    • Durapave - paving blocks, Creative Gardens - clearing the site and top soil

    • Mr Farrow - plumbing

    • John Sykes, Dave and Brian - paving

    • D & B Rochell for the fabrication and installation of the wrought iron gates and the noticeboard

    • Sheila Pantry who designed the garden, did the planting and project management.

So thanks to all who have helped in the garden's creation and to all those residents and Todwick Parish Council who have been encouraging TEAG's activities.

This project is part of Todwick Environment Action Group's continuing efforts to beautify the ancient village of Todwick.

Todwick Neighbourhood Watch

The Todwick Neighbourhood Watch Scheme began in July 2006 and now has over 200 of the 800 Todwick households signed into the scheme. A clear signal that for our village, law and order is an issue we care about. Our scheme is part of the South Yorkshire Neighbourhood Watch Association and South Yorkshire Police - we have strong allies within our organisation.

What does the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme mean? It is to be aware of what is happening around you. To support and improve the quality of life within the village, actively reducing crime and the fear of crime by working together.

Neighbourhood Watch is not a vigilante group!

This is community organisation where we all pull the same way. Why should the behaviour of a few spoil it for the majority? Each household signing up for the scheme, increases the impact on unlawful behaviours.

If you are not yet signed up to the scheme, this means that your street or avenue has not got a co-ordinator.

Ah yes, but as a co-ordinator doesn't that mean lots of meetings and working long hours? No. It does mean that you will be meeting more people in your village and getting to know what is happening in your village. A quarterly newsletter will require delivering to the properties you have agreed to look after and possibly the occasional "Be aware" flyer if news needs to be circulated quickly.

The scheme requires us to hold a minimum of 1 meeting per year - the Annual General Meeting.

So, if you are interested in the well being of your village, then I as Chairman, would like to meet you.

The scheme has got off to a cracking start. We need more people involved to drive it forward. Don't forget there are other benefits of being signed up to the Todwick Neighbourhood Scheme:-

  • You are eligible to apply to your insurance company for a reduction in the premium for your home insurance.
  • You will receive a starter pack containing useful information and a "UV" pen to mark your property with your postcode.
  • In the near future we will be asking if you would like a free fire safety check by the Fire Brigade. Smoke alarms can be provided free for vulnerable properties and there are special smoke alarms for those people with hearing difficulties.

Household joining the scheme would be expected to pay £1 for the year. This year, Todwick Parish Council has said that it will pay the costs for each household in the village signing up for the Todwick Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

If you want to belong to the scheme, but not be a co-ordinator, I still would like to hear from you.

Please phone me - Norman Anderson on 01909 770130 for further details.

Todwick Parish Bowling Club

Recreation Ground, Todwick

The Club has almost 100 members and 15 League Teams covering the Rotherham and Maltby area. Our main programme runs from 1st April to 30th September each year and because the ground is floodlit the season can be extended for matches and competitions until the end of October.

We offer free coaching sessions on Saturday mornings throughout the season which is open to new players of any age.

The Clubs excellent facilities are extensively used to host many events supporting the community and nominated local charities.

Todwick Parish Bowling Club and the community

Todwick Parish Bowling Club (TPBC) is probably the largest single community group in the village.

We are always seeking to improve and extend the facilities for members. to encourage members to join and to bring other members of the community to the club. We believe that bowls is a sport that can be played and enjoyed by people of all members will varying degrees of physical disability. Our aim is to be recognised as a club, which is accessible to all.

As a Club, we are seeking to:

  • improve the facilities for sport, leisure and recreation in Todwick
  • help to improve the health of the community, through regular exercise in the form of bowling; Bowls is a healthy outdoor sport, in which the medical profession encourages participation, as it gives regular exercise and can be played at an enjoyable level by people of all ages. Doctors have actively encouraged some of our members to play bowls, because it is good gentle exercise for most parts of the body.
  • generally improve the quality of life available to the people of Todwick, many of whom are not in employment. This we can achieve by encouraging them to play or sit and watch bowls matches, enjoy the fresh air and pleasant environment and see the bowling club as an alternative venue in which to engage in another social aspect of village life.
  • encourage more young people to take up sport as a worthwhile activity for life, both on a personal level and as a team and club member. Thus developing not only their sporting skills, but also their community and social skills. As a club we have worked with the local primary school since 2000, by holding coaching sessions and a competition for the year 6 children.
  • encourage more women to play bowls, a sport in which ladies can participate at all levels. TPBC has no artificial divisions into ladies and gents sections, but is a single unified club.
  • encourage new members to join the club and adopted a scheme for making bowling more accessible to all.
