Aggressive management and the boom in out-of-town business parks confine more and more people to their desks. Little wonder that the last refuge of relaxation is a quick Web surf or email session during a snatched 5 minutes here or there. Now even this is under threat as "Big Brother"-style employers remove these rights of Internet/email access, subjecting employees to constant surveillance and invasions of privacy.

www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/biodiesel.htm
The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) information on biodiesel that is a relatively new synthetic fuel made from vegetable oils, and its domestic production raises serious health and safety concerns. The information on the website describes some of the hazards and contains advice from HSE that biodiesel should not be produced at home. Biodiesel is produced commercially and can be bought from some petrol stations. However there are 'recipes' available on the internet for the domestic production of
biodiesel. These usually involve mixing methanol with sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda or lye), and pouring the resulting mixture into vegetable oil. Home production raises serious health and safety concerns, as it involves hazardous chemicals and the risk of fire and explosion. Making biodiesel is a potentially hazardous process that should only be carried out in controlled conditions by people with the proper training and experience. At the very least a poorly made product could seriously damage a vehicle engine. Health and Safety Executive: Bullying UK
www.hse.gov.uk/research/hsl_pdf/2006/hsl0630.pdf
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK reminds employers to step up
procedures to tackle the growing problem of bullying in the workplace.
Bullying costs employers 80 million working days and up to £2 billion
in lost revenue every year. Nearly half a million people in Britain
experience work-related stress at a level they believe is making them
ill and the financial costs to society are estimated at £3.8 billion a
year. The Health and Safety Laboratory report Bullying at work: a
review of the literature discusses definitions of bullying at work,
and highlights and reviews current publications and research in the area
of bullying at work. Bullying is a big contributor to work
related stress that affects one in six people in Britain (source: The
Psychosocial Working Conditions (PWC) survey). Bullying is a form of
organisational violence and if not dealt with properly is a potential
source of work-related stress (WRS) and can take many different forms,
from actual physical violence and threats of violence - to name calling,
sarcasm and teasing. Employers should review whether they are doing
enough to secure the well being of their employees and the effective
performance of their business. HSE's Management Standards for
Work-Related Stress represent a widely adopted, practical and usable
approach to taking the necessary steps to manage stress and improve
well-being in the workplace. It is important that a dialogue between
employers and employees is setup to find a way to manage this growing
problem. HSE's Stress Management Standards apply to six aspects of work
design that research has shown as potential stressors: control; demands;
support; relationships, role and change. The Relationships standard
covers bullying. The Management Standards, guidance and comprehensive
supporting toolkit are available, free of charge, from the HSE website www.hse.gov.uk/stress/standards.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published an important research report developing a method for assessing stress caused by exposure to heat in the in the workplace. The research concludes that large parts of UK industry have difficulty in managing and assessing heat stress. It has long been known that work related heat stress could compromise health and safety and lead directly or indirectly to worker injury and death. As a result the HSE sponsored a research project to ensure that developments in heat stress assessment were evaluated and documented in a valid and usable methodology. A framework was formulated for the design, development and evaluation of such a methodology. This framework consisted of three stages; an Exploratory Stage, a Design and Development Stage and an Evaluation Stage. This resulted in the development of a practical heat stress assessment methodology. Copies of The development of a practical heat stress assessment methodology for use in UK industry RR 008 ISBN 0 7176 2533 8, price £25, are available from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2WA, UK. Health and Safety Executive: Nanotechnology UK
www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr274.htm
Nanoparticles are the end products of a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological processes, some of which are new and radically different, others of which are quite commonplace. Nanoparticles: an occupational hygiene review RR274 from the UK Health and Safety Laboratories reviews processes for the deliberate development and manufacture of nanoparticles products and has considered sources and routes of exposure, levels of exposure, numbers exposed, knowledge gaps and future trends. It also states that current knowledge is insufficient for risk assessment purposes. There is little evidence to suggest that worker exposure arising from the production of nanoparticles has been adequately assessed.

Health and Safety Executive: Safety Representatives UK
www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr363.htm
Health and Safety Executive study presents a review of the quantitative and qualitative evidence for the link between worker representation and consultation and effective health and safety management. Through a series of detailed case studies in two sectors of the economy, it examines the dynamics of representation and consultation in improving health and safety performance. Its review of previous studies and the evidence of the case studies detailed in the report support a conclusion that joint arrangements, through which workers are represented and consulted on their health and safety, are likely to have better outcomes than arrangements in which management acts without consultation. However, it suggests that arrangements for worker representation and consultation are dependent upon a number of preconditions for their effectiveness. These include a strong legislative steer, effective external inspection and control, demonstrable senior management commitment and capacity towards both health and safety and a participative approach, competent hazard/risk evaluation and control, effective autonomous worker representation at the workplace and external trade union support.

Health Protection Agency: Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) UK
www.hpa.org.uk/radiation
The UK National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) web site gives details of a number of NRPB guidelines and statements, see details below. There are, however, reports which allege that there is a link between exposure to EMFs and other long-term adverse effects on health. Despite any clear scientific evidence of harm, concern continues to grow. In order to respond to the growing concern, the
NRPB, which has a statutory responsibility to provide scientific advice to government on radiation matters, set up an Advisory Group chaired by a leading epidemiologist Sir Richard Doll. They published a review of the literature, (and two supplementary reviews) in which the Group concluded that the evidence did not support the view that electromagnetic fields are a cause of cancer. A further review of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields and the risk of cancer has recently been published (2002). This concluded that the power frequency electromagnetic fields that exist in the vast majority of homes are not a cause of cancer in general. However, some epidemiological studies do indicate a possible small risk of childhood leukaemia associated with exposure to unusually high levels of power frequency magnetic fields.
Health Protection Agency: Legionnaires' disease UK

The project was a collaboration between three UK universities, the Universities of Greenwich, Ulster and Liverpool and brings together the UK's leading experts in Fire Safety Engineering and evacuation behaviour. Project HEED investigated human behaviour associated with the evacuation of high rise buildings. The basis of the project was an analysis of the World Trade Center (WTC) evacuation of 11 September 2001 through face to face interviews with survivors and advanced computer simulation. The evacuation of the WTC complex represents one of the largest full-scale evacuations of people in modern times. The survivors hold a tremendous amount of invaluable information concerning their experiences of the conditions within the towers and the evolving evacuation scenario.
Highways Agency Electronic Service Delivery for Abnormal Loads (ESDAL) UK
www.highways.gov.uk/esdal
The UK Highways Agency Electronic Service Delivery for Abnormal Loads (ESDAL) website is to help haulage companies plan their journeys when moving abnormal loads (if a load exceeds 2.9m wide, 18.65m long or 44 tonnes in gross weight, it is classed as an abnormal load in the UK). Legislation requires that vehicles and load movements that exceed standard dimensions need to be pre-notified to police, highway and bridge authorities, a process that currently involves millions of faxes being sent every year. ESDAL is streamlining this process using the latest technology, providing welcome relief to everyone involved in the movement of abnormal indivisible loads. Using ESDAL's innovative mapping system, Hauliers can easily identify the route they need to take, and get full details of all the organisations they will need to notify before making the movement.

Royal Academy of Engineering: Nanotechnology UK
www.raeng.org.uk/news/releases/shownews.htm?NewsID=188
In June 2003 the UK Government commissioned the Royal Society, the UK national academy of science, and the Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK national academy of engineering, to carry out an independent study of likely developments and whether nanotechnology raises or is likely to raise new ethical, health and safety or social issues which are not covered by current regulation.
'Nanoscience and nanotechnologies: opportunities and uncertainties' - was published on 29 July 2004. The report illustrates the fact that nanotechnologies offer many benefits both now and in the future but that public debate is needed about their development. It also highlights the immediate need for research to address uncertainties about the health and environmental effects of nanoparticles - one small area of nanotechnologies. It also makes recommendations about regulation to control exposure to nanoparticles.

Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents RoSPA: Winter driving tips UK

Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) driving advice.
Skidding can generally be avoided through good observation and
anticipation - and smooth use of the vehicle's controls. Your risk of
skidding increases if your tyres do not have adequate tyre depth. The
legal minimum tread depth for cars and light vehicles in the UK is
1.6mm, but for safety RoSPA recommends 3mm. If you are unsure about the
tread depth of the tyres, get them checked by a professional. Correct
tyre pressure is also very important. Under-inflated tyres will increase
your fuel consumption. Over-inflated tyres will reduce your grip on the
road, making it vital that you reduce your speed. It is better to avoid
skidding rather than hope you can control a skid when it happens. Such a
hope is rarely realised.

Wednesday, 28 April 2010, gave the UK's workforce a chance to reflect on the many people who are killed, seriously injured or made ill while doing their job. Compiled by health and safety information expert Sheila Pantry, the regularly updated electronic guide includes locations of everything from plaques to pillars, as well as photographs, details of temporary commemorative sites, links to other sources and a diary of events. Among the many permanent memorials listed are those dedicated to victims of disasters at the Piper Alpha oilrig near Aberdeen, the Flixborough chemical plant in Lincolnshire and the Senghenydd mine in Wales. Yet for every catastrophe involving multiple fatalities, there are hundreds more accidents for which there is no memorial and which can only be remembered quietly by grieving families, colleagues and employers.
